Marble Wine Chiller
When you think of a marble wine bottle chiller it conjures up all sorts of images. Many people would not think of using this material as a canister of sorts, but it is not only is it effective in carrying out it’s duties as a cooling unit, but it can be very attractive, too. When you see a piece of this stone, smooth and polished to perfection you can’t help but admire it. When presented in the right fashion it denotes a heir of distinction and strength at the same time.
This can be a very suitable material to make a bottle cooler out of. It is not a very porous rock at all and it’s density makes it an excellent insulating material. When you are purchasing this material for counter tops or other construction reasons it should be noted that the darker the stone the harder it is. But in this capacity the strength is of no consequence since you are not relying on the stone for it’s rigid nature, but simply as a decorative piece.
When being used as a canister for cooling a bottle, it serves this need very well. It is a very simple process of adding a little ice and pushing your bottle deep inside to try to maintain a consistent temperature throughout. However, since red and white blends require a certain temperature for maximum flavor and texture it is difficult to reach and maintain a certain level. This is the real drawback with using a bucket to cool your bottle. They are better suited to keep a bottle cool that has already been cool. But again, maintaining an exact temperature is nearly impossible.
Particular care and caution have to be exercised if you find that you have to move your canister to another location. There are several reasons for this. First, you have to remember that this piece of stone by itself has a considerable weight associated with it. Now, you are not only putting ice and ultimately water in it, but a bottle, too. This is going to dramatically increase the overall weight of this item, even more than you will probably imagine at first.
Second, and more importantly, is that when the unit is being used it is going to create condensation on the outside. Not only is this an increased risk, but it will be especially difficult to notice since the rock is dark in color. It will be very easy to misjudge the surface, the weight or even both at this point. If you do not take this into consideration this could spell disaster.
For all practical purposes, these units will do the trick for cooling a bottle. Unless you are a connoisseur with extreme particular values to serving temperature then this should not really be a problem. It is true that you technically cannot take a marble wine chiller to an exact temperature and maintain it there, but it will do the trick when nothing else is available.
